Lessons From My Mothers Palms, 2024, film
A mother-daughter hair care routine quickly transforms into history lessons centred around a collective of black women from the Black Power Movement who changed the course of British Society.
Plot
Dymond is a young and curious girl fascinated about where she comes from, where her mother comes from as well as all of her invisible foremothers who have paved the way before her. After the death of Dymond’s Grandma, Dymond seeks to preserve the life and presence of her Grandma by knowing everything there is to know about her story. Every month, Dymond and her Mum dedicate an evening after school to tend to her hair. Whilst Dymond’s hair is being combed, watered and nourished by her mother, she learns about new history-makers from a catalogue of black-british women whose stories are often erased or sidelined, in the UK’s mainstream media, popular culture and educational curriculum.
